Herbert Simon. Artificial intelligence as a framework for understanding intuition

چکیده

Herbert Simon made overlapping substantive contributions to the fields of economics, psychology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, decision theory, and organization theory. Simon s work was motivated by the belief that neither the human mind, human thinking and decision making, nor human creativity need be mysterious. It was after he helped create ‘‘thinking’’ machines that Simon came to understand human intuition as subconscious pattern recognition. In doing so he showed that intuition need not be associated with magic and mysticism, and that it is complementary with analytical thinking. This paper will show how the overlaps in his work and especially his work on AI affected his view towards intuition. 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Explaining the Ineffable: AI on the Topics of Intuition, Insight and Inspiration

Artificial intelligence methods may be used to model human intelligence or to build intelligent (expert) computer systems. Al has already reached the stage of human simulation where it can model such "ineffable" phenomena as intuition, insight and inspiration. This paper reviews the empirical evidence for these capabilities.

Market as an Artifact: Aggregate Efficiency from Zero Intelligence Traders

Three phenomena—the disparity between the assumed and observed attributes of economic man, the link between nature and artifacts, and the use of computers as a source of knowledge––fascinated Herbert A. Simon. He built a new paradigm for each field—bounded rationality to deal with the disparity, the science of the artificial as its link to nature, and artificial intelligence for creation of kno...

Herbert Simon and Agent-Based Computational Economics

In this article, we review the development of agent-based computational economics (ACE) in light of Herbert Simon’s lifetime contributions to a variety of scientific areas. We take an integrated view of Simon’s contributions to economics, computational-theoretic underpinnings of bounded rationality (algorithmic foundations of behavioral economics), artificial intelligence, expert systems, probl...
